Line/Copy Editing, Proofreading, and English Tutoring

Line Editing & Copy Editing

Line Editing:

Line editing concentrates on content and structure while elevating the quality of writing, making the writing more engaging, coherent, and impactful. Through line editing, editors refine sentence structure, enhance transitions, eliminate redundancy, and improve word choice while maintaining the author’s voice and style.

Copy Editing:

Copy editing looks at the technical aspects of writing: grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax, working toward a polished, error-free manuscript. Through copy editing, editors correct grammar and mechanics, check for consistency with spelling (British versus English; name with multiple spellings, etc.), and format according to publishing style guides.

Even though copy and line editing are different and I have tried to separate these, I have found that I edit whatever I see. Therefore, whether it is part of line editing or copy editing, I will either change it with track changes or leave a note for you. For that reason, while I explain the differences here, I do not charge differently.

Proofreading

Proofreading, the final stage of editing, focuses on errors and inconsistencies. After the developmental editing, line editing, and copy editing, proofreaders identify and improve whatever was missed in the previous steps, including spelling errors, punctuation errors, awkward transitions, incorrect punctuation, and other distracting surface-level mistakes.
